The UK is taking another step toward treating stablecoins as money. In the October 28, 2026 budget, the government announced a tax rule for qualifying stablecoins.
It will be included in Finance Bill 2026-27. If the rule is adopted, it is expected to take effect in April 2027.
Individuals and trusts will not pay capital gains tax when disposing of qualifying stablecoins. Transitional gains and losses are still possible.
For UK traders who keep working capital in stablecoins, this could noticeably simplify their record-keeping. Today, such transactions have to be treated as disposals of an asset.
The exemption does not apply to every coin called a stablecoin. A qualifying stablecoin must meet several conditions at once:
In our view, the criteria target coins that work as a means of settlement rather than as an investment product.
Interest-like income from lending such stablecoins will be taxed as savings income. Companies will account for them under the loan relationship rules.
Who or what | What is proposed |
Individuals and trusts, disposals of qualifying stablecoins | no capital gains tax, transitional gains and losses are possible |
Interest-like income from lending stablecoins | taxed as savings income |
Companies | accounted for under the loan relationship rules |
Transfers into and out of lending arrangements and liquidity pools | "no gain, no loss" from April 6, 2027 |
Expected start of the stablecoin rule | April 2027, if it is adopted |
A separate rule covers transfers by individuals and trusts into and out of lending arrangements and liquidity pools. From April 6, 2027, such transfers will be treated as "no gain, no loss" transactions.
The tax does not disappear. It is deferred until the economic disposal of the asset, and moving coins into a pool by itself no longer triggers a gain calculation.
We believe regulators in different countries are moving in the same direction with growing confidence. We recently wrote about the FASB proposal under which stablecoins in the US could be classified as cash equivalents.
Now the UK is also proposing to treat payment stablecoins more like money.
From what we see, stablecoin liquidity is the backbone of almost any cross-exchange trade. The clearer their legal and tax status, the more comfortably both retail traders and companies can work with them.
Stablecoins are the main currency of cross-exchange trades, and gaps in their quotes are easier to catch when every exchange is visible in one window. Our arbitrage screener keeps dozens of venues in one window, refreshes quotes every second and shows each gap together with the volume actually behind it. The spread calculator helps you check what survives fees, network costs and slippage at your size. The bot is fully manual. It never connects to your exchange API keys.
