Whales added 15,000 BTC on the correction while longs lost a billion: who sold to whom

On October 8 bitcoin fell from $82,180 to $80,315, and $1.14 billion in positions were liquidated within a day. Of that, $1.05 billion came from longs - the largest daily total since August.

Meanwhile, large holders added about 15,000 BTC over the same week of correction. By the weekend bitcoin was back in the $82,900-83,100 range.

Who sold to whom

The picture is typical of a sharp correction. Overloaded longs were knocked out at market, exchanges closed them with sell orders, and on the other side were buyers who don't need leverage.

From what we see, on days like these coins move from those who held them on borrowed money to those who hold them outright. The market usually calms down afterward, because the excess leverage has already been flushed out.

What this means for funding

After a long cascade, bitcoin funding resets. The rate, inflated by leveraged buying, drops to zero or even turns negative.

In our view, it's the calm phase after such a reset that is convenient for setting up a trade. Leverage has been flushed out, order books are recovering, and a new skew hasn't built up yet.

What an arbitrage trader should do

Don't read whale buying as a signal for a rally. They buy on their own horizon, which may be longer than any of your trades, and their purchases don't guarantee a quick bounce.

We believe it's more useful to watch how quickly funding starts rising again. If leveraged longs return before the price does, the skew will open again, and a spot-plus-short-perp trade will collect it without betting on direction.

Our tools

The reset and renewed rise of funding after a cascade only show up if you track rates across all exchanges at once. Our arbitrage screener keeps dozens of venues in one window, refreshes quotes every second and shows each gap together with the volume actually behind it. The spread calculator helps you check what survives fees, network costs and slippage at your size. The bot is fully manual. It never connects to your exchange API keys.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

1. How much was liquidated on October 8?

$1.14 billion in a day, of which $1.05 billion was longs - the largest daily total since August. Bitcoin dipped to $80,315.

2. How much did whales buy?

About 15,000 BTC over the week of correction. By the weekend bitcoin was back at $83,000.

3. What happens to funding after a cascade?

It resets to zero or turns negative: leveraged longs have been flushed out, and the inflated rate drops.

4. Is this a signal for a rally?

No. Whales buy on their own horizon, which can be longer than any trade, so it's more useful to watch how quickly funding starts rising again.

Conclusion

During the week of correction, longs lost $1.05 billion to liquidations while whales added about 15,000 BTC. Coins moved from those who held them on borrowed money to those who hold them outright.

For arbitrage, this means a funding reset and a calm window to set up a trade. Whale buying is not a signal for a rally, but how fast funding starts overheating again is a useful hint.
