MVRV and NUPL: On-Chain Indicators of Bitcoin Market Tops and Bottoms

MVRV and NUPL are two on-chain indicators that answer a simple question. How far in profit or loss are bitcoin holders on average?

When unrealized profit is huge, the temptation to lock it in grows. When most holders are at a loss and have already sat through several waves of selling, there is almost no one left to sell.

Both indicators are built on this logic.

What realized cap is

Regular market cap is the price multiplied by the number of coins. Realized cap values each coin at the price at which it last moved on the blockchain.

The result is an approximate aggregate cost basis of all coins. If a coin was bought cheaply and has not moved since, it enters the calculation at the old low price.

What MVRV is and how to calculate it

MVRV is the ratio of market cap to realized cap. A value above one means the market is in profit on average, below one means it is at a loss.

The higher the MVRV, the more paper profit holders have accumulated. In our view, it is more of a sentiment thermometer than a precise entry or exit signal.

What NUPL is

NUPL (Net Unrealized Profit/Loss) shows net unrealized profit or loss as a share of market cap. The formula: market cap minus realized cap, divided by market cap.

The indicators are mathematically linked: NUPL equals one minus one divided by MVRV. In essence, it is the same signal on a different scale.

Which MVRV and NUPL zones are seen as overheating and bottoms

There are no exact thresholds. Analysts use rough zones that have shifted from cycle to cycle.

Zone

MVRV (approx.)

NUPL (approx.)

How it is usually read

Capitulation

below 1

below 0

the market is at a loss on average, sellers are running out of steam

Hope and fear

about 1-1.5

0-0.25

recovery after a downturn

Optimism

about 1.5-2.5

0.25-0.5

steady growth, profits are building up

Greed

about 2.5-3.5

0.5-0.75

profit-taking increases

Euphoria

above 3.5

above 0.75

risk of overheating and reversal

From what we see, MVRV peaks get lower with each cycle. So waiting for past extremes as a mandatory condition for a reversal is risky.

A hypothetical MVRV and NUPL calculation

The numbers below are hypothetical and serve only as an illustration.

  • bitcoin market cap: 1.5 trillion dollars
  • realized cap: 0.6 trillion dollars
  • MVRV = 1.5 / 0.6 = 2.5
  • NUPL = (1.5 - 0.6) / 1.5 = 0.6
  • checking the link: 1 - 1 / 2.5 = 0.6

In this hypothetical case, the market is on the border between optimism and greed. Holders are in solid profit on average, but there is still room before euphoria.

What the limitations of MVRV and NUPL are

  • lost coins are counted at the old price and understate realized cap
  • transfers between wallets of the same exchange revalue coins even though the owner has not changed
  • coins on exchanges and in ETFs move differently from those of private holders
  • the indicators are slow: they show the market phase, not the turning point
  • zone thresholds are fitted in hindsight based on past cycles

We believe MVRV and NUPL are best used together with funding, open interest and exchange flows. A single indicator rarely gives the full picture.

How an arbitrage trader can use MVRV and NUPL

An arbitrage trader does not bet on direction, but the market phase affects which opportunities come up more often.

  • in the greed and euphoria zones, funding on perps more often stays high, and funding trades look more attractive
  • in such periods the risk of sharp pullbacks is higher, so the margin buffer on the futures leg should be increased
  • in the capitulation zone, funding often turns negative, and spreads between exchanges widen on volatility
  • in the calm hope zone, spreads are usually more modest, and precise fee calculation matters more

In our view, MVRV and NUPL are useful to an arbitrage trader as background: they hint at which market regime to prepare for, but specific trades still have to be calculated from live prices.

Our tools

The market phase hints at where to look for opportunities, while spreads and funding change every second, so it is easier to see them across all exchanges at once. Our arbitrage screener keeps dozens of venues in one window, refreshes quotes every second and shows each gap together with the volume actually behind it. The spread calculator helps you check what survives fees, network costs and slippage at your size. The bot is fully manual. It never connects to your exchange API keys.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

1. What is MVRV in simple terms?

It is the ratio of bitcoin's market cap to its realized cap, that is, to the approximate aggregate cost basis of all coins. Above one, the market is in profit on average, below one, at a loss.

2. How does NUPL differ from MVRV?

NUPL shows net unrealized profit as a share of market cap. Mathematically it equals one minus one divided by MVRV, so both indicators reflect the same thing on a different scale.

3. What MVRV value is considered overheated?

Roughly, an MVRV above 3.5 is considered the overheating zone, but peaks decline from cycle to cycle. There is no hard threshold.

4. What is bitcoin's realized cap?

It is the sum of all coins valued at the price of their last move on the blockchain. It is used as an estimate of the market's aggregate cost basis.

5. Can you trade on MVRV and NUPL alone?

It is not a good idea. The indicators are slow and show the market phase rather than the turning point, so they are combined with funding, open interest and exchange flows.

6. Where can I find MVRV and NUPL?

Both indicators are published by on-chain analytics services. Their calculation methods may differ slightly, so values on different sites sometimes diverge.

Conclusion

MVRV and NUPL show how far in profit bitcoin holders are on average. Both are calculated using realized cap and help identify the market phase, from capitulation to euphoria.

The indicators have no exact thresholds, and peaks decline from cycle to cycle. For an arbitrage trader they are useful as background for choosing a mode of work, while decisions on trades are still made from live spreads and funding.
