What is funding?

Funding (funding fee or funding rate) is a periodic fee charged on perpetual futures across centralized exchanges. The main goal of funding is to minimize the difference between spot and perpetual prices. The funding fee is regularly paid between traders holding long and short positions.

You can earn from this mechanism via funding arbitrage — a strategy where traders profit from the difference between funding fees on perpetual contracts and the spot price of the asset.

The core strategy is to open both long and short positions on different platforms, or between spot and futures. The main profit comes from the positive funding rate being paid out to your position.

How to profit from funding arbitrage

Open your position:
- Buy the token on spot (e.g. Bitcoin).
- At the same time, open a short position on perpetual futures for the same token.

Earn the funding fee:
- If funding is positive, you get paid for your short. If it’s negative, you earn for holding the long.

Hold the position:
- As long as the funding rate is in your favor, keep your position open and collect payouts every 4 or 8 hours (or every 1 hour on some DEXs).

Close positions:
- When the funding rate becomes unprofitable, close both positions.
- You can find more detailed instructions in the free training materials available to all users.
