Banks Move Into Crypto: Sparkassen Launch Trading, Standard Chartered Buys Zodia Custody

October 2026 turned out to be the month of the banks. One after another, traditional financial firms are opening crypto to their clients, buying crypto businesses and obtaining licenses.

The biggest story of the week is Germany. On October 19, the Sparkassen savings banks launched crypto trading, with a fee of 0.99 euros per order.

Details

Sparkassen, Germany

0.99 euros per order

Standard Chartered

signed definitive agreements to acquire Zodia Custody

terms not disclosed, approvals required

Robinhood

obtained a license in Dubai for ten asset classes, including bitcoin

retail launch in 2027

We believe that for many Sparkassen clients this will be their first crypto purchase through a familiar bank rather than a separate exchange. A fixed fee per order is easy to understand even for a beginner.

The Standard Chartered deal is about infrastructure. The bank is buying Zodia Custody, a digital asset custody service, but the terms have not been disclosed and closing depends on approvals.

Robinhood is still only preparing. The Dubai license covers ten asset classes, but the retail launch is planned for 2027.

What happened earlier in October

  • Standard Chartered opened bitcoin and ether to wealthy clients in the UAE
  • Jeonbuk Bank in Korea issued its first bitcoin-backed loans
  • Payward, the parent company of Kraken, is buying Lithuania's Saldo Bank

The movement is coming from both sides. Banks are entering crypto, and crypto companies are buying banks.

What the mass entry of banks gives the market

First, new buyers. Clients who would never open an exchange account get crypto at the same bank where their savings are.

Second, fiat on-ramps. The more regulated banks work with crypto, the easier it becomes to move euros, dollars and other currencies in and out.

Third, regional premiums. In our view, every new local buying channel will have its own price, and it does not have to match the quotes on the major global exchanges.

What this means for an arbitrage trader

From what we see, when a new flow of buyers comes in through one region, prices there drift away from global ones for a while. That is how regional spreads between local venues and global exchanges are born.

But banks are entering gradually, and deals like the Zodia Custody acquisition are still awaiting approvals. You should not count on an instant effect, but it is worth watching prices by region.

Our tools

When banks open new buying channels, regional divergences appear on different venues at different times, and they are easier to catch when you can see all exchanges at once. Our arbitrage screener keeps dozens of venues in one window, refreshes quotes every second and shows each gap together with the volume actually behind it. The spread calculator helps you check what survives fees, network costs and slippage at your size. The bot is fully manual. It never connects to your exchange API keys.

Conclusion

In October, banks took more steps into crypto than in many months before: Sparkassen launched trading, Standard Chartered is buying Zodia Custody, Robinhood got a license in Dubai, and Kraken, from its side, is buying a bank in the EU.

For the market, this means new buyers and more convenient fiat on-ramps. For an arbitrage trader, it is a reason to watch regional premiums more closely, as they inevitably appear along with new buying channels.
