Crypto hacks usually end with the money gone for good. The Qubic story is a rare case with a different ending.
On October 20, 2026, Qubic announced the recovery of funds, and the first tokens have already gone back to verified owners. The amount returned has not been disclosed yet.
Late on October 17 and early on October 18, an attacker exploited a vulnerability in seed phrase generation in Qubic web wallets. The recovery phrases turned out to be insufficiently random.
This let the attacker drain about 1.4 million dollars in QU tokens, roughly 2.94 trillion QU from 1,404 accounts.
The network's consensus was not affected. The problem was in the web wallet, not in the blockchain itself.
On October 18, Qubic halted the blockchain at tick 85,371,949 so the stolen tokens could not move any further. At that point, 87.1% of the stolen funds were still on the network.
The remaining 12.9%, or about 180 thousand dollars, had already reached MEXC. The exchange froze the receiving account within roughly an hour.
Stage | What happened |
October 17-18 | theft of about 2.94 trillion QU from 1,404 accounts |
October 18 | network halted at tick 85,371,949, account frozen on MEXC |
October 19 | web wallet version 4.26.4 released |
October 20 | Computor quorum approved the recovery, network restarted |
In our view, an hour to freeze is a good result for a centralized venue. Usually, stolen funds get moved further before anyone reacts.
The quorum of network validators, known in Qubic as Computors, approved the recovery, and the network was restarted. Affected users can file a claim through the official portal until May 1, 2027.
Proof of ownership will be required. Receipts for withdrawals from an exchange to your own wallet will do.
The team advises anyone who created a web wallet before version 4.26.4 to set up a new recovery phrase and move their funds. That version was released on October 19.
We believe the main lesson here is about wallets in general. An arbitrage trader constantly moves coins between exchanges, and a weak recovery phrase puts the entire capital at risk.
The last point is especially relevant. Qubic warns directly: the team never asks for seed phrases and never messages users in DMs.
From what we see, after any high-profile hack, fake "recovery services" pop up in chats. Their goal is to take whatever the first attacker did not manage to steal.
After network halts and freezes, a token's price on different exchanges often diverges, and you can only see it by comparing all venues at once. Our arbitrage screener keeps dozens of venues in one window, refreshes quotes every second and shows each gap together with the volume actually behind it. The spread calculator helps you check what survives fees, network costs and slippage at your size. The bot is fully manual. It never connects to your exchange API keys.

1. What happened to Qubic in October 2026?
Because of weak seed phrase generation in web wallets, an attacker drained about 1.4 million dollars in QU from 1,404 accounts.
2. How do I get stolen QU back?
File a claim through the official Qubic portal by May 1, 2027, and attach proof of ownership - for example, receipts for withdrawals from an exchange.
3. Do I need to change my Qubic seed phrase?
Yes, if your web wallet was created before version 4.26.4. The team advises creating a new phrase and moving your funds to it.
4. Does the Qubic team send direct messages?
No. The team never asks for seed phrases and never writes in DMs; such messages are a scam.
Qubic showed that with a fast reaction from the network and the exchange, stolen funds can be recovered. Halting at the right tick and the freeze on MEXC within an hour preserved almost everything that was stolen.
For a trader, the takeaway is simple: keep track of wallet versions, store withdrawal receipts and do not trust "helpers" in direct messages.
