Thailand opens the door to crypto ETFs: rules for Bitcoin and Ether funds in force since October 16

Since October 16, 2026, Thailand has had a framework for exchange-traded crypto funds. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced it on October 8, and the rules are set out in 11 regulatory notifications.

At launch, only two underlying assets are allowed - Bitcoin and Ether. For the market, this is one more Asian jurisdiction where investors can get exposure to the largest coins through a familiar exchange-traded fund.

What is allowed from day one

The funds are passive. Each one tracks a single asset and, on average over the reporting year, holds at least four-fifths of its net assets in it.

The regulator may add other coins later. Decisions will take into account liquidity, market acceptance, network security and investor protection.

How investors are protected

Fund units can only be traded on the Stock Exchange of Thailand, and the coins themselves are held by SEC-regulated custodians. Brokers are banned from issuing margin loans to buy these funds.

Before buying, an investor must confirm they understand the risks. In our view, it is a sensible package: leverage is cut off, custody is supervised, and access goes through an ordinary brokerage account.

Thai mutual funds and private funds will be able to buy local crypto ETFs. Depositary receipts on foreign crypto funds, however, are banned in the first phase, so institutional demand inside the country will be directed at local products.

When the first funds will appear

October 16 is the date the rules took effect, not necessarily the launch day of the first funds. It is better to track the timing of specific ETFs separately.

What this means for demand and spreads in Asian hours

We believe the effect will be gradual. Funds buy coins as money flows in, and this demand falls within the trading hours of the Thai exchange.

From what we see, when fund demand is concentrated in one time zone, price gaps between venues during those hours are wider than usual. This was the case with US spot ETFs, whose flows are most visible during New York trading hours.

If Thai funds gather meaningful volume, it makes sense to watch the price difference between Asian and other exchanges during Bangkok trading hours.

Our tools

If Thai fund demand arrives during Asian hours, it is easier to catch gaps between exchanges when you can see every venue at once. Our arbitrage screener keeps dozens of venues in one window, refreshes quotes every second and shows each gap together with the volume actually behind it. The spread calculator helps you check what survives fees, network costs and slippage at your size. The bot is fully manual. It never connects to your exchange API keys.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

1. When did Thailand's crypto ETF rules take effect?

Thailand's SEC announced the framework on October 8, 2026, and it took effect on October 16. That is the date the rules started to apply, not necessarily the launch of the first funds.

2. Which cryptocurrencies are allowed in Thai ETFs?

Only Bitcoin and Ether at launch. Other assets may be added later based on liquidity, market acceptance, network security and investor protection.

3. Can you buy a Thai crypto ETF with leverage?

No. Brokers are banned from providing margin loans to buy these funds, and investors must confirm they understand the risks.

4. Can you buy receipts on foreign Bitcoin ETFs in Thailand?

Not in the first phase. Depositary receipts on foreign crypto ETFs are banned, while Thai mutual funds and private funds can buy local crypto ETFs.

Conclusion

Since October 16, Thailand has had a crypto ETF framework in force: passive funds on Bitcoin and Ether, trading on the Stock Exchange of Thailand, custody with regulated custodians and a ban on margin loans.

For the market, it is another step by Asia toward exchange-traded crypto products. For an arbitrage trader, the interest lies in Asian hours: if the funds gather volume, gaps between venues during that time will become more visible.
